Summer changes the rhythm of day programs across Northern California. Pools open, farmers markets fill up, and community centers run extra activities, and DSPs are often the ones making sure the people they support get to take part in all of it.
Day support is one of the three main categories of DSP work, alongside residential and employment support. Residential DSPs focus on daily living at home, employment DSPs focus on job coaching, and day support DSPs spend their time in the community. That could mean planning an outing, teaching someone how to navigate public transit safely, or simply being present so a person can try something new without fear of being unsupported if things go sideways.
The value of this work goes beyond a fun afternoon. Regular community involvement builds confidence, social skills, and independence, and it is one of the clearest ways a DSP can see the impact of their work in real time. Watching someone order their own food at a counter for the first time, or make a new friend at a rec league, is the kind of moment that keeps people in this field for years.
If this sounds like the kind of career where the good days genuinely outweigh the hard ones, our For Job Seekers page lists agencies across Northern California currently hiring for day support roles. Providers looking to grow their day program team can learn how listing with us works on our For Providers page.
Coming up in August, we look at how DSPs support transition-age youth and their families as the school year approaches, a season that brings its own unique demands for day and residential support teams alike.
